A US$380-million oil pipeline connecting a Vietnamese harbour to central Khammuan province of Laos is set to begin after completion of a feasibility study. The pipeline, a project of Petro Lao Company, is expected to reduce the costs of oil imports to Laos.

Oil pipeline projects are controversial around the world because of the risks that potential spills pose to ecologies, as well as implications for rights issues related to land, environment and labor. As an example, a high profile case is being fought by indigenous and environmental activists against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) in the US.
